 Our testimony
Easter, Day 46

Today is the anniversary of the opening of the first hospital in the United States, Pennsylvania Hospital.   It is a private, non-profit 534-bed teaching hospital in Philadelphia and now  is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Health System.  It was Dr. Thomas Bond who had the idea for a hospital that would be an institution “for the reception and cure of the sick poor…free of charge. ”  Dr. Bond was a highly reputed surgeon who also served as trustee and gave clinical lectures at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned the title of “Father of Clinical Medicine.  He began his studies in Annapolis but also trained in Paris and England.  He admired the British hospitals and when he came back, he tried to raise funds to establish a place of care for the sick,  poor and mentally ill. To help raise funds, he turned to his friend, Benjamin Franklin who, together with Thomas Stretch, supplied the funds for the original capital for the building of the hospital. Thomas was an American clockmaker and the first Governor of the Colony in Schuylkill. The hospital continues to flourish and has a reputation for innovation, maternity services, teaching, care of those with mental illness and has achieved multiple recognition for its achievements.

Reflection
The seal of the Pennsylvania hospital, chosen by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond is from the story of the Good Samaritan, Take Care of Him and I will repay Thee."  This is an example of the American legacy which is different than legacies of many other countries.  The gospel of John, today has Jesus giving his message but also telling his listeners that everyone will not accept the message, as a matter of fact, “The hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.”   We know that there are societies in our day in which that is literally true.  May our country always be a caring community, do the loving thing, and trust in God, as we pray on our currency.

My God!  How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!
Thomas Jefferson

Where liberty dwells, there is my country.
Benjamin Franklin

Alleluia verse for today
The spirit of truth will testify to me, says the Lord,
And you also will testify.

Caring for the sick in the hospital setting is a continuing testimony to
“If you do this to the least of my people, you do it for me.”
