 Love in the Family
Amoris Laetitia

Today, the document by Pope Francis on Catholic family life titled “Amoris Laetitia, On Love in the Family,” will be released.  This will be his Apostolic Exhortation after the 2015 synod on the family which theme was “the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and the modern world.”  This Apostolic Exhortation is the conclusion of a two-year synod process discussing both the beauty and challenges of family life today.

Perhaps it is appropriate that this publication comes on the day that is celebrated as  “All is Ours Day.”  When we think about family, we cannot be thinking only about ourselves as individuals but need always to be conscious and discerning about how words, decisions, actions and attitudes affects all the members of the family.  And, because we are all members of the family of God, we each have responsibility for our thoughts and actions in this regard also.  On Relevant Radio yesterday, they were anticipating today’s announcement and expect to spend the whole day today discussing this.  They also reminded us that our families take their origin from the Trinity.

In the Lectionary reading for today, the leaders were discerning how to address the witnessing of the Apostles to the Resurrection of Jesus.  One of the leaders gave sage advice: Let the action take its course;  the outcome will be what God wills. This could be our attitude towards someone in our family whose behavior we don’t quite understand or approve of.

In the Gospel today, Jesus feeds the crowd.   His miracle is like many other that proclaims to us that we are His family.
