 Mysteries of human salvation
St. Joseph
Lent Day 39

Many saints have had a devotion to St. Joseph.  One of these, St. Teresa of Avila, said that we pray to various saints for specific things but we can pray to St. Joseph for everything.  Another holy person who had a devotion to St. Joseph was Angelo Guiseppe Roncalli..  He was consecrated  a bishop on the Feast of St. Joseph in 1925 and Just prior to the opening of Vatican Council II, he, then Pope John XXIII, added the name of St. Joseph to the canon which we now call the Eucharistic Prayer. Officially inaugurated into his Petrine ministry on March 19, 2013, Francis celebrates the anniversary of his papacy each year on the day the church celebrates Joseph's feast day. Within months of his election, Francis also permanently amended the Eucharistic Prayers used at most Catholic Masses to include Joseph's name along with Mary's. Father  Maurice Zundel, a Swiss Mystic and Poet compared Joseph’s decision to not take Mary for his wife because she was found to be with child, comparable to Abraham’s decision to  Kill his son Isaac at the command of God.  This was a testing of both men both as to their love for the person involved as well as their fidelity to the law and command of God.           Collect for today
Grant, we pray, almighty God
That by Saint Joseph’s intercession,
Your Church may constantly watch over the unfolding of the mysteries of human salvation
Which beginnings you entrusted to his faithful care.
Reflection
Today is the first day of Spring.
May St. Joseph’s prayer for us put a “spring” in our steps
As we make our way during holy week
Through the cross and death to Resurrection and glory.
