 Risen Life
Lent,  Day 16

Today’s gospel has Jesus telling the story of Lazarus and giving the admonition “ If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.”
This is a sobering thought:  that if we had the experience of witnessing someone rising up after they had been dead, we would not be effected in a life-changing way?  This is a parable, but when you think about it, the disciples of Jesus saw at least 3 persons whom he had raised from the dead and yet only one of the disciples accompanied him to his death, even though he had told them that he would die and then rise again.
This is why we have lent- to give us 40 days to reflect on the implications of the message of Moses and the prophets and repent, restore, recover, reaffirm, regenerate our faith in our Savior who was raised from the dead by his Father, who is our Father and who is preparing us, these 40 days for our risen life as the disciples experienced it after Pentecost and for our resurrection at the end of our lives.

By this present sacrifice, we pray, O Lord,
Sanctify our observance,
That what Lenten discipline outwardly declares
It may inwardly bring about.
